For breakouts around your mouth, cut back one thing that touches the area, such as lip products, toothpaste or shaving tools, for 2 weeks at a time, and the likely cause narrows down.

Does acne at the corners of your mouth have a cause of its own?

The corners of the mouth get lip balm, toothpaste, food and shaving tools passing over them many times a day, so beyond acne, a reaction to something touching the skin is worth suspecting too. The Korean Dermatological Association explains that more than half of contact reactions on the lips come from lipstick and lip balm, and that toothpaste, dental materials and food can also be causes.

A 2024 systematic review gathered 47 reports (58 people) of allergy to lip products and found castor oil, benzophenone-3, gallates, waxes and colophony were the ingredients that came up most often. Because it collected case reports, it can’t tell you how common these reactions are. Use it only to note whether any of these names appear in the full ingredient list of the lip balm you use.

If you rotate several lip balms, settle on just one for the first 2 weeks.

Is acne around the mouth and chin in men caused by the razor?

Shaving can overlap with it, but there is no basis for blaming the razor alone. Start by writing shave days and days new bumps appeared in the same column to check whether they actually overlap.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) advises people with acne to try both electric and safety razors and pick the one that feels better. With a safety razor, the method is to soften your beard with soap and warm water, apply shaving cream, and shave gently with a sharp blade without nicking pimples. If you usually dry-shave in five minutes before work, switch to this order in round 3 and log for 2 weeks.

Setting aside 2 weeks of softening your beard and shaving with a new blade shows whether shaving lines up with the bumps.

What about acne around your mouth and chin before your period?

If it repeats before every period, mark the day your period starts on the same calendar, separate from the product cutback. The Korean Dermatological Association explains that adult acne carried on from puberty often gets worse around menstruation.

What matters here is when you start. If the 2 weeks you stop lip balm happen to fall on the week before your period, the result can look backward, as in “I stopped lip balm and got more breakouts.” Start each round right after your period ends, and mark anything that came up in the week before your period in parentheses. If it repeats at the same point for two or three months, bringing your calendar to an appointment is the faster route.

What signs suggest it may not be acne?

The KDCA explains that the most important thing in diagnosing acne is whether comedones (clogged pores) are present. If there are almost no comedones, but a fine red rash spreads around the mouth and beside the nose, it may be a different condition from acne.

In a 2004 study, 75 people with perioral dermatitis had clearly increased water loss through the skin compared with controls. If the lips themselves itch, crack, swell or crust, it is closer to the contact cheilitis that the Korean Dermatological Association describes. Perioral dermatitis is a condition handled in medical care, enough that a 2022 review pooled 11 drug studies (733 people), and that review also concluded that most of the evidence is of low certainty. If you see these signs, getting checked by a doctor comes before the cutback plan.

Sorting out whether it shows up around the mouth, beside the nose or on the lips themselves makes a condition other than acne easier to spot.

Cutback order, 2 weeks at a time

Round (2 weeks each) What to cut back or change Try it like this What to log daily
Round 1 Lip balm, lipstick, lip oil Stop what you’ve been using and settle on one product with a short ingredient list Number of new bumps, lip tightness
Round 2 Toothpaste and residue around the mouth Switch toothpaste; after brushing and meals, rinse around the mouth with water and pat lightly Days spicy food or fruit juice got on your skin
Round 3 How you shave New blade, soften the beard, shaving cream (skip if you don’t shave) Shave days
Round 4 Masks and hands Set mask-change times; rest your chin on your hand less Hours in a mask

Keep the changes from earlier rounds in place when you move to the next round. If one round shows a clear drop in new bumps, don’t use that product again to double-check; take a photo of its full ingredient list and show it at your appointment. The Korean Dermatological Association explains that when an allergy is suspected, a patch test is used to identify the substance behind it.

When is it time to ask a dermatologist about mouth-area bumps?

  • If your lips keep swelling, cracking or crusting, ask a dermatologist whether you need a patch test.
  • If a fine red rash without comedones spreads around your mouth and beside your nose, or it burns, have a dermatologist check whether it is something other than acne.
  • If nothing changes after all four rounds (8 weeks), consider bringing the order table and your photos to a dermatologist.
  • If deep, painful bumps appear in the same spot before every period for two or three months, talk to a dermatologist.

Frequently asked questions

Is acne around the mouth and chin in men caused by the razor?

Shaving can overlap with it, but there is no basis for blaming the razor alone. Start by writing shave days and new-bump days in the same column to see whether they overlap. Korea's KDCA advises softening your beard with soap and warm water and then shaving gently with a sharp blade, without nicking pimples.

What should I do about acne around my mouth and chin before my period?

First, mark the day your period starts on the same calendar to confirm the repeating timing. The Korean Dermatological Association explains that adult acne that has carried on from puberty often gets worse around menstruation. Start cutting back products right after your period ends so the two factors don't mix.

Does acne at the corners of the mouth have its own cause?

The corners of the mouth are touched many times a day by lip products, toothpaste, food and shaving tools, so a contact reaction is worth considering alongside acne. The Korean Dermatological Association considers more than half of contact reactions on the lips to come from lipstick and lip balm. Cutting back one thing at a time narrows down the suspects.
