# Flaky Skin on Face? Change Your Washing Habits Over 7 Days First

> When your face starts flaking, skip the scrub and spend a week changing one thing at a time: your cleansing tool, water temperature, cleanser, and when you moisturize.

Before adding a scrub for flaky skin on your face, change one thing a day for a week: tools, water temperature, cleanser pH, moisturizing time. Log included.

## Should you reach for a scrub when your face is flaking?

White flakes are a sign the outer layer is already unsettled, so it makes more sense to look back at your daily cleansing before adding a scrub. In a test published in 2022, 60 healthy adults washed their forearms with four types of soap four times a day for 7 days, and water loss (TEWL) went up in every group after the first wash.

If a single wash already makes the outer skin layer lose more water, there is little reason to add a gritty scrubbing step on top. So this guide uses a method where you change one thing a day for a week (cleansing tool, water temperature, cleanser, and when you moisturize) and compare on day 7. Deciding how often to exfoliate comes after that, if the flaking has not settled.

## Can a cleansing brush or washcloth make flaking worse?

It can, which is why the 1-week routine starts by dropping tools on day 1. In a 2018 study, 6 healthy adults washed one arm with a nylon towel and soap twice a day for 2 weeks, and on that side, compared with the side washed with soap alone, water loss rose and natural moisturizing factor, serine, and lactic acid dropped.

There were only 6 participants and the test was done on the arm, but the direction is clear: repeated rubbing strips moisturizing components from the outer skin layer. If you use a cleansing brush or a rough sponge, or have a habit of wiping your face with a towel, rest all of them on day 1 and wash with lather in your palms only. Press the towel to your face to lift off the water.

## If you use a low-pH cleanser and still flake, is it the wrong one?

It is hard to decide fit by pH alone; you also need to look at how often you wash and how hard you rub. In the 60-person test above, the only acidic cleanser (a syndet) lowered skin pH at the final time point, yet water loss went up after the first wash in all four groups the same way.

A 2020 systematic review pooling 63 studies of people aged 50 and older found that syndet and amphoteric surfactant cleansers caused less skin dryness than regular soap, and that pH 4 products led to better barrier measurements. Because the data come from older adults, they do not transfer directly, but they work as a rule of thumb: when you switch cleansers, look at the cleansing ingredients and the pH on the label rather than the "squeaky clean" feeling. If you use a low-pH product but still wash three times a day or rub lather for a long time, cut back to twice a day on day 3.

## Should you peel flaky skin or cover it with moisturizer?

Do not peel it; cover it with moisturizer. In a 2022 study on how to apply moisturizer, the water content of the outer skin layer was significantly higher when it was applied within 5 minutes of washing, at 1.0 to 2.0 mg/cm², once or twice a day, and in patients with dry skin, a clear difference after 8 weeks appeared only with twice-daily use.

The Korean Dermatological Association also advises spreading moisturizer on gently right after washing or showering, while skin is still damp. Pulling lifted flakes off with a fingernail tugs on the parts still attached and adds irritation. On days you face cold wind on your way to work, add a slot to your routine for one more layer 15 to 20 minutes before heading out.

## Your day-by-day 1-week cleansing reset

| Day | What you change today | What to note | Keep from this day on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Rest the cleansing brush, sponge, and rough towel; wash by hand | Tightness right after washing (0–3), 1 photo | Hand washing, pressing the towel to dry |
| Day 2 | Hot water → lukewarm | Whether the shower stream hit your face | Lukewarm water |
| Day 3 | Alkaline soap → slightly acidic, low-irritation cleanser, twice a day | Cleanser name, pH on the label | Washing twice a day |
| Day 4 | Moisturize within 5 minutes of washing | Time you applied it (minutes after washing) | Moisturizing within 5 minutes |
| Day 5 | Moisturize twice a day, morning and evening | Afternoon tightness (0–3) | Twice a day |
| Day 6 | One more layer 15–20 minutes before going out | Time spent in cold wind | Moisturizing before going out |
| Day 7 | No changes, just compare | Photo in the same lighting as day 1, flaking (0–3) | Plan for next week |

Score from 0 (none) to 3 (severe), and mark days when itching or redness came with the flaking. If your scores have not gone down by day 7, start next week by checking whether you brought in any new products.

## When does a flaky face call for a dermatologist?

- If itching or redness continues along with flaking, or spreads, after you finish the 1-week routine, see a dermatologist.
- If stinging and redness last for several days after switching cleansers, stop using it and have a dermatologist check your skin.
- If your skin peels badly while you are using a prescribed topical medicine, talk with the clinic that prescribed it rather than stopping on your own.
- If oily, red flaking keeps coming back between your eyebrows or beside your nose, it may be a different skin condition, so consider getting seen.

## The evidence in brief

- In a 2022 test (PMID 34741581) where 60 healthy adults used four soaps for 7 days, water loss went up in every group after the first wash, and the alkaline soap group had more redness than the glycerin and creamy soap groups.
- A 2022 study on moisturizer application (PMID 34743412) reported that the water content of the outer skin layer was significantly higher when moisturizer was applied within 5 minutes of washing, at 1.0 to 2.0 mg/cm², once or twice a day.
- In a 2020 systematic review (PMID 31945604) pooling 63 studies of people aged 50 and older, syndet and amphoteric cleansers caused less skin dryness than regular soap.

## Frequently asked questions

### How often should you exfoliate your face?

While your skin is visibly flaking white, the better order is to change how you cleanse for one week before exfoliating more often. Research shows that washing alone can increase water loss from the skin, so if your skin is still rough after you sort out your tools, water temperature, cleanser, and moisturizing timing, then decide separately how often to exfoliate.

### My face gets flakier and breaks out the more I use a low-pH cleanser. Is it just not right for me?

It is hard to judge fit by pH alone. In a 2022 study of 60 people comparing four soaps, water loss went up in every group after the first wash, so you also need to look at how many times a day you wash and how hard you rub. If redness or itching continues even after pausing the cleanser for a few days, see a dermatologist.

### Should I peel off dry flaky skin on my face, or cover it with moisturizer?

Covering it with moisturizer is the better choice; do not peel it. Pulling it off by hand or rubbing irritates the part of the outer skin layer that is still attached. In a study on how to apply moisturizer, the water content of the outer skin layer was significantly higher when it was applied within 5 minutes of washing, at 1.0 to 2.0 mg/cm², once or twice a day.

## What to check when choosing a product for this routine

Check the criteria below before the product name. Each item can be found on the full ingredient list or in the product description.

| Item | What to look for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lipid ingredients | Whether lipids such as ceramides appear in the full ingredient list | It gives you a clear point of comparison when choosing the moisturizer you will apply within 5 minutes of cleansing |
| Fragrance | Whether fragrance is absent from the full ingredient list | In a week when your skin is flaking, it removes one variable from your irritation notes |
| Texture | Whether it is an oil-based cream, or a lotion or water cream | The Korean Dermatological Association suggests oil-based creams for dry skin and lotions or water creams for combination or oily skin |
| Irritation testing | Whether the brand says how irritation was tested | Results vary by person, but it adds one more fact to check when bringing in a new moisturizer |
