# Blackhead Removal on Your Nose: A No-Squeeze Weekly Calendar

> For nose blackheads, wash gently twice a day, keep any extra step like a mask or pad to once or twice a week, skip squeezing, and compare photos taken in the same light after 4 weeks.

Before rushing blackhead removal, try a no-squeeze weekly calendar for nose and forehead blackheads, then compare photos in the same light after 4 weeks.

## How many times a week should you do blackhead care?

What you do every day is a gentle wash, morning and night. A separate step, such as an exfoliating mask or pad, starts at once or twice a week. In a 2006 randomized trial that split men with acne by how often they washed, open comedones and non-inflammatory lesions decreased significantly after 6 weeks in the group that washed twice a day with a mild cleanser, while red bumps (papules) increased in the once-a-day group.

However, the overall difference when the three groups were compared with each other was not significant, and only men were studied, so this is no reason to wash more often than twice a day. Doing an extra step every day tends to make the sides of your nose sting first. The Korean Dermatological Association also notes that overusing exfoliating products can backfire through irritation, so alternate extra-step days and rest days on your calendar.

*The daily part is just two gentle washes with lukewarm water, morning and night.*

## Should you exfoliate before or after washing your face?

This calendar's rule is to wash off sunscreen, makeup and surface oil first, then pat your face dry before the extra step. The Korean Dermatological Association describes facial cleansers as products that keep skin clean by clearing away sebum and sweat, and masks as special care for moisturizing or exfoliating.

A rinse-off mask goes on after washing and comes off with lukewarm water, and you don't need to wash again afterward. Peel-off types that stick to your nose create a lot of friction when you pull them off, so this calendar leaves them out. We could not find a study that directly compared doing it before versus after washing, so the order is an editorial choice.

## Does salicylic acid help blackheads?

The evidence behind this guide has no trial that compared a product containing only cosmetic-level salicylic acid against its base formula to see whether blackheads went down. So this section makes no claim about results and only covers how to log it if you use it.

If you use something with salicylic acid, keep it in just one of your cleanser, toner or pads, and mark the days you used it on your calendar so you can spot days when acids overlap. Since the Korean Dermatological Association notes that overusing exfoliating products can backfire through irritation, stop that week's extra steps if stinging or redness shows up several days in a row. If black dots turn red and swollen or spread widely, get them checked by a dermatologist before switching products.

## If you don't squeeze them, do blackheads just stay?

There's no need to squeeze, because the same process starts over in the spot you emptied. The Korean Dermatological Association describes comedones as non-inflammatory lesions formed when dead skin and sebum get stuck in a hair follicle, and it states that extracting open comedones does not change the course of acne and is done for cosmetic reasons only.

Pressing with your nails can rupture the follicle wall, and Seoul National University Hospital explains that careless squeezing easily leads to inflammation and scarring. In weeks when you touch your nose more, such as exam weeks or weeks of long mask-wearing, add a "times touched" note to that day's box so you can see when your hands wander. For teens, simply spending less time in front of the mirror can help too.

## What should you compare after 4 weeks?

Retake photos of your nose and forehead in the same window light and at the same distance as day one, then look at the two sets side by side. The 2006 randomized trial on washing frequency kept everyone on the same wash for 2 weeks and then followed them for 6 weeks, so treat the 4-week photo as a first check, and if you keep the calendar going, take one more under the same conditions.

Shine is hard to compare in photos, so log "nose shine (low / medium / high)" separately. If you mix whether shine dropped and whether black dots dropped into one box, it will be hard to tell what actually changed after 4 weeks.

*Photograph your nose from the front and the side, then retake both after 4 weeks in the same light and at the same distance.*

## Weekly calendar for nose blackheads

| Day | Morning | Evening | What to note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mon | Lukewarm water + mild cleanser | Wash → moisturize | Nose shine, times touched |
| Tue | Same wash | Wash → one rinse-off mask or pad | Any stinging |
| Wed | Same wash | Wash → moisturize only (rest day) | Any redness |
| Thu | Same wash | Wash → moisturize | Time in a face mask or working out |
| Fri | Same wash | Wash → one extra step (2nd of the week, optional) | Any stinging |
| Sat | Same wash | Wash → moisturize only (rest day) | Any redness |
| Sun | Same wash | Wash → moisturize | Extra steps this week; photos if it's week 4 |

In any week where you noted stinging or redness, cut next week's extra steps to one. Switching products before the 4 weeks are up shakes the baseline you set with your day-one photos.

## When is it worth seeing a dermatologist about nose blackheads?

- If black dots spread widely or multiply mixed with small white bumps after more than 4 weeks of gentle care, see a dermatologist.
- If black dots have turned into red, swollen, painful pimples, have a dermatologist check them.
- If dents or dark marks start to remain where you squeezed or picked, book a dermatology consultation.
- If your nose and cheeks flush easily and also feel hot or burning, see a doctor to check whether it is a different condition.

## Evidence summary for this guide

- In a 2006 randomized trial that split men with acne into groups washing 1, 2 or 4 times a day (PMID 17014635), open comedones decreased significantly after 6 weeks in the twice-a-day group, but the overall difference among the three groups was not significant.
- In the same 2006 trial (PMID 17014635), the group that washed only once a day had a significant increase in inflammatory lesions such as redness and papules over 6 weeks.
- The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) National Health Information Portal (checked 2026-09-30) advises washing gently with lukewarm water twice a day and not squeezing or scratching.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many times a week should you do blackhead care?

Washing twice a day, morning and night, is the baseline, and a separate step such as an exfoliating mask or pad starts at once or twice a week. The Korean Dermatological Association notes that overusing exfoliating products can make acne worse through physical irritation. No study has set a number for extra steps, so decide whether to add more only after 4 weeks without stinging.

### Should you exfoliate before or after washing your face?

This guide's rule is to wash off makeup, sunscreen and surface oil first, then pat your face dry before any extra step. A rinse-off mask goes on after washing and comes off with lukewarm water, with no need for a second wash. We found no study comparing before-wash and after-wash timing.

### Does salicylic acid help blackheads?

The evidence behind this guide has a gap here: no trial compared a product containing only cosmetic-level salicylic acid against its base formula for blackheads, so we don't state an effect. If you use something with salicylic acid, keep it in just one of your cleanser, toner or pads, and mark the days you used it plus any stinging or redness on your calendar. If black dots spread or turn into red, swollen bumps after more than 4 weeks of gentle care, see a dermatologist.

## What to check when choosing a product for this routine

Check the criteria below before the product name. Each item can be found on the full ingredient list or in the product description.

| Item | What to look for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Texture and cleansing agents | Whether it is a foam or a gel, and which cleansing agents appear near the top of the ingredient list | You use this step morning and night, so if the sides of your nose feel tight on some days, the calendar makes the cause easier to narrow down |
| Acid ingredients on the label | Whether acid ingredients such as salicylic acid, AHA or PHA are listed, and where they sit in the ingredient list | When you add an exfoliating mask or pad in the same week, you can check ahead of time whether acids will overlap |
| pH and fragrance | Whether it is labeled low pH or mildly alkaline, and whether fragrance is listed | On days the skin around your nose stings or turns red, you already know which variables to compare in your log |
| Irritation testing | Whether the brand says how irritation was tested | Results differ from person to person, but it gives you one reference point for comparing irritation in a cleanser you use every day |
