# Male Acne on Shave Days and Workout Days: A Routine and Log

> For male acne, handle friction on shave days and sweat plus gear on workout days as separate problems, then count new bumps on your chin the next morning so you can see which day type lines up with flare-ups.

Split male acne care into shave days, workout days and days with both. Includes a shaving log for blade age, stroke direction and next-morning chin bumps.

| Item | Detail | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Peak age | In men, acne is most frequent between ages 16 and 19, and friction, mechanical irritation and heavy sweating are listed as aggravating factors | Korean Dermatological Association · Institution |
| Right after shaving and the next day | 10 healthy men received 60 seconds of electric-shaver irritation, and their skin was measured twice, at 20 minutes and at 24 hours | 2024 PMID 38951871 · B |
| Ingrown hairs | In 35 men with bumps from hairs growing back into the skin after shaving, lesions dropped by 60% or more in the areas where a glycolic acid lotion was applied | 1993 PMID 8261811 · A |
| Post-workout shower timing | Across 23 active men followed for 2 weeks, there was no significant difference in truncal acne among a no-exercise group, a shower-within-1-hour group and a shower-after-4-hours-or-more group (p=0.84) | 2008 PMID 18304176 · A |
| Scars | Among 2,201 18-year-old men in Brazil, 22% had acne scars, and the cheekbone area was the most common site at 80% | 2016 PMID 27438194 · B |

## What should you do about bad jawline acne in your 20s?

If several bumps are red, sore or full of pus, get them looked at first. If things are milder, start by writing down the daily friction your jaw goes through, split by type of day. The Korean Dermatological Association notes that acne in men peaks between 16 and 19, and that friction, mechanical irritation and heavy sweating make it worse. For a man in his 20s, shaving, sweat and a helmet strap can all land on the jaw at once.

Rather than blaming the razor right away, count chin bumps each morning and keep shave days and no-shave days in separate columns. In the Brazilian survey of 2,201 18-year-old men, worse acne went along with worse scarring, so if red, painful bumps start adding up while you are logging, don't keep waiting.

Some bumps around the jaw and mouth only look like acne. One common type, especially with curly beard hair, forms when a shaved hair curls back into the skin. In a 1993 study of 35 men, lesions fell by 60% or more in the areas where a glycolic acid lotion was used, and the men were able to go back to shaving every day. These bumps call for a different approach than acne, so if they keep showing up only where your beard grows, bring your log to a dermatologist and have the two told apart.

## What order should you follow on shave days?

Four steps: wet the skin, check the blade, shave lightly, then rinse and apply. NIAMS, part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, also advises shaving gently with a sharp blade after softening the beard with soap and water or a similar lather.

Check shaving irritation twice: right after you shave and the next day. The 2024 study applied 60 seconds of electric-shaver irritation to the cheeks and necks of 10 healthy men, then measured the skin separately at 20 minutes and at 24 hours. If your log also splits stinging right after the shave from bumps the next morning, you can see how days with a dull blade or repeated passes over one spot play out. On the aftershave side, a 2006 trial found that a formula with a licorice-derived ingredient (licochalcone A) lowered post-shave redness more than the base formula alone, but the abstract does not give the number of participants, so take it as background only.

*Stick to the same order every time: wet, check the blade, shave lightly, then rinse and apply.*

## Should you shower right after working out?

Showering right away is the usual advice, but the evidence that a short delay adds breakouts is weak. In a 2008 pilot trial, 23 active men were split into a no-exercise group, a group that showered within 1 hour of exercise and a group that waited 4 hours or more, and after 2 weeks there was no significant difference in truncal acne among them (p=0.84).

That said, each group had only 7 or 8 men, so it can't settle the question, and the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends changing clothes and showering right after a workout. For the face, look at gear rubbing before sweat. In a 2025 survey of gym users in Saudi Arabia, 33.2% reported exercise-related skin symptoms and acne from friction was seen in 25%, with the hands, neck and face affected most often. Note in your log exactly where a helmet strap, cap brim or chin strap touches.

## Do men need toner after shaving?

The evidence behind this guide includes no study showing that a toner is a must. The Korean Dermatological Association describes toner as a product that adds moisture after washing, and lotion as the next step that adds moisture and nourishment once more.

If your skin feels tight on a shave day, putting on at least one of the two, a toner or a lotion, makes your log easier to read. If whatever you apply right after shaving stings, write down its name and how much it stung, then check whether the same one also stings on a day you did not shave. On days you wear sunscreen, also note whether you took it down to your jawline.

## Shave-and-workout breakout log

| Day type | Shaving tool (blade or electric) | Days since blade change | Direction and number of passes | Minutes spent wetting before shaving | What you applied after | Time from workout to shower | New bumps around chin and mouth next morning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shave only | | ___ days | | ___ min | | — | ___ bumps |
| Workout only | — | — | — | — | | ___ min | ___ bumps |
| Both | | ___ days | | ___ min | | ___ min | ___ bumps |
| Neither | — | — | — | — | | — | ___ bumps |

Keep filling it in by date for 2 to 3 weeks, then compare the average bump count for each day type. If "shave only" days keep beating "neither" days, change how often you swap blades or how long you wet your beard first. If "workout only" days run higher, adjust helmet and cap friction and when you shower.

## When should you have jaw bumps checked by a doctor?

- If pus-filled bumps with a red rim around each hair follicle spread across the shaved area, it may be folliculitis, so see a dermatologist. The AAD advises taking 30 days off shaving if shaving is the cause.
- If bumps from ingrown beard hairs keep coming back, see a dermatologist to have them told apart from acne.
- If red, painful bumps keep increasing after 6 to 8 weeks of changing your shaving and workout habits, or if dents start to remain where bumps have gone down, book a dermatology appointment.

## Evidence summary for this guide

- In a 2008 pilot trial that followed 23 active men for 2 weeks (PMID 18304176), there was no significant difference in truncal acne among a no-exercise group, a shower-within-1-hour group and a shower-after-4-hours-or-more group (p=0.84).
- In a 2016 study of 2,201 18-year-old men in Brazil (PMID 27438194), acne scar prevalence was 22%, and the cheekbone area was the most common site at 80%.
- In a 2025 survey of gym users in Saudi Arabia (PMID 41234265), exercise-related skin symptoms were reported by 33.2%, and acne from friction was seen in 25%.

## Frequently asked questions

### What should a man in his 20s do about bad jawline acne?

If several bumps are red, sore or filled with pus, a dermatology visit makes more sense than waiting it out at home. If it is milder, use the triggers the Korean Dermatological Association lists (friction, mechanical irritation and heavy sweating) as your guide and, for 2 to 3 weeks, log next-morning chin bumps separately for days you shaved, days you worked out and days you wore a helmet strap. If pus-filled bumps centered on hair follicles spread across the shaved area, it may be a different condition, so have it checked.

### How can men deal with acne, and is a dermatology visit needed?

No method has been shown to make acne vanish in a few days. At home, cut down on triggers such as shaving, sweat and gear rubbing, and stick to washing twice a day. If nothing changes after 6 to 8 weeks, or red and painful bumps keep increasing, the next step is a dermatology visit. In a survey of 2,201 18-year-old men in Brazil, 22% had acne scars, and scarring was worse when acne was more severe.

### Do men need toner after shaving?

The evidence behind this guide includes no study showing that men must use a toner. The Korean Dermatological Association describes toner as a product that adds moisture to the skin after washing, so if your skin feels tight after shaving, apply either a toner or a moisturizer and note in your log whether it stings.
